- What is an MPU?
- The MPU (Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung) is a medical-psychological assessment of your fitness to drive. It is ordered by the licensing authority when there are serious doubts about your driving fitness – for example after drunk driving, drug use, or too many penalty points.
- When is an MPU ordered?
- The most common reasons: alcohol at the wheel (always from 1.6 ‰, from 0.3 ‰ in case of repeat offences), drug use (even without driving), 8 or more points in Flensburg, or serious traffic offences.
- What is the pass rate?
- Nationwide, approximately 50% of participants pass the MPU on their first attempt. With professional preparation, the rate rises to over 90%.
- How much does an MPU cost?
- The MPU fee is between 350 and 750 euros depending on the reason. Preparation costs (1,000–2,500 €) and abstinence documentation are additional.
- Can the MPU be repeated?
- Yes, as many times as needed. There is no legal limit. However, we strongly recommend professional preparation before retaking it.
- Do I need abstinence documentation?
- For alcohol MPU from 1.6 ‰ or repeat offenders, usually yes (6 or 12 months). For drug MPU, abstinence documentation is almost always required.
- What happens if I fail the MPU?
- You receive a negative report with a detailed explanation. You can retake the MPU after renewed preparation. The negative report is not automatically forwarded to the licensing authority – you decide whether to submit it.
