MPU for Points: When Penalty Points Lead to an MPU

Accumulating 8 or more points in the Flensburg traffic register leads to licence revocation. Getting your licence back typically requires an MPU.

When is a points-related MPU required?

Germany's points system has three stages:

  • 4–5 points: Written warning.
  • 6–7 points: Written caution.
  • 8 points: Licence revocation for at least 6 months.

After revocation, the licensing authority may order an MPU before reissuing your licence, especially for repeated or serious offences.

What is different about the points MPU?

Unlike alcohol or drug MPUs, the points MPU focuses on your driving behaviour and attitude towards traffic regulations. No abstinence documentation is required.

You need to demonstrate convincingly why and how you have fundamentally changed your behaviour behind the wheel.

Häufige Fragen

Is the points MPU easier than the alcohol MPU?
It is different but not necessarily easier. No abstinence proof is needed, but you must convincingly explain why you have fundamentally changed your driving behaviour.
When do points expire?
Minor offences: 2.5 years. Criminal offences without licence revocation: 5 years. Criminal offences with licence revocation: 10 years.
