MPU for Drugs: Cannabis, Cocaine and Other Substances

Drug use – even without driving – can lead to licence revocation and an MPU in Germany. NEUSTART helps you navigate this process professionally.

When is a drug-related MPU required?

In Germany, a drug-related MPU may be ordered in the following cases:

  • Cannabis: When THC levels above 3.5 ng/ml are detected in the blood while driving.
  • Hard drugs (cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, MDMA): Even a single use can lead to licence revocation.
  • Prescription drug abuse: Misuse of benzodiazepines, opioid painkillers or similar substances.

How long must abstinence be proven?

  • Cannabis: Usually 6–12 months.
  • Hard drugs: At least 12 months.
  • Mixed use: The strictest rule applies – typically 12 months.

Abstinence must be documented through a certified screening programme. We advise you on which programmes are recognised.

Häufige Fragen

Does a single use of cannabis lead to an MPU?
A single use alone does not necessarily trigger an MPU. However, if THC is detected in your blood while driving or a pattern of regular use is established, an MPU is very likely.
Is the drug MPU harder than the alcohol MPU?
It is generally more extensive and more expensive. Abstinence documentation is almost always required, and the psychological interview examines consumption patterns in greater detail.
